Invasion Alert!

Platform X has transformed!

Known worldwide, Space Invaders is one of the most recognisable videogames in history. It has become a pop culture icon, and is often used to represent videogames as a whole. Experience the 1978 classic alongside 13 other versions of the iconic game including sequels, spin-offs and clones.

Witness the Invasion

Created by Tomohiro Nishikado for Taito in 1978, Space Invaders quickly became a gaming phenomenon in its homeland Japan. “Invader Houses” began popping up, and videogames moved from the traditional arcade into cafes, bars, restaurants and even the fish & chip shop.

Heavily influenced by science fiction novels and movies, the design of the invaders themselves draws on descriptions in H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds as well as squid and crabs.

Often credited as the first shoot-em-up game, Space Invadcers also popularised the attainment of High Scores, and is the first videogame in which players can have multiple lives. It is also the first game to include a continuous, dynamic soundtrack – four descending notes that accompany the gameplay and get progressively faster as the aliens move down the screen – just like a heartbeat.

Can you get the hi-score on all 14?
